Refrigerated containers – also known as reefer containers – are essentially large, walk-in freezers. Heavily insulated to protect goods inside the container from external temperatures, they use a compressor to extract heat from the air, while fans circulate the remaining cold air.

Most refrigerated containers offer a wide range of temperature settings, enabling both frozen and chilled storage – they act as both fridge and freezer. TITAN’s ArcticStore container, for example, can be set to any temperature between -40°C and +45°C, making it suitable for a wide range of applications.

Specialist refrigerated storage containers, such as blast freezers for fast freezing and ultra freezers for extreme temperatures, are also available. These use slightly different chilling technology than standard reefers.

Cold storage container temperatures vary by model. A standard cold storage container, such as TITAN’s ArcticStore, can typically be set to any temperature between -40°C and +45°C. Minus 40 is sufficient for most cold storage needs, though some products – like vaccines and oily fish – may require even colder temperatures.

In such cases, ultra-freezers, such as the Arctic UltraFreezer, can reach temperatures as low as -75°C.

Refrigerated containers are ‘active’ powered units – much like your fridge freezer at home. You choose whatever temperature you need (the ArcticStore has a range that spans -40 to +45°C), and the unit will maintain that temperature as long as it is switched on.

An insulated container is a ‘passive’ solution that does not have a power source. Instead, insulation material is added between the container’s interior and exterior walls to provide some resistance to the ambient temperature outside the container.

While an insulated container cannot guarantee a specific internal temperature, it effectively “buffers” the goods being stored. This helps slow the effects of high or low ambient temperatures outside and can also reduce condensation.

While many customers prefer to rent portable cold store solutions from us, we are, of course, happy to accommodate clients who have the need or desire to purchase.

We offer brand new (never used), lightly used and older rental fleet units. Depending on the quality required, lead-time is normally between 10 – 90 days. If you need cold storage faster than this, we can supply you with a reefer container rental solution for the interim period at a discount.

Supplementary services and support like SmartArctic remain available subject to additional fees.
