A standard shipping container is 8ft 6in (2.59 metres) tall. A High Cube container is 9ft 6in (2.89 metres) tall, with one extra foot of internal height. The roof is reinforced steel and can take 300 kg per square metre of static load. Heights are measured from the ground when the container is placed flat.

The standard height of many containers was influenced by practical transport limits. Designers had to balance internal volume against the restrictions of roads, bridges and handling equipment.
