A fully loaded reefer container holds its temperature for 4 to 6 hours when unplugged, depending on outside conditions. Cold air loss speeds up after that. For longer power gaps, a backup genset is recommended. Plan unplugged moves to take no more than 2 hours where possible.

A loaded reefer usually stays cold longer than an empty one. The cargo acts like a thermal battery, storing cold energy and slowing temperature changes when the power is disconnected.
